An enjoyable, organised homework programme helps children acquire the skills and self-motivation that will help them become life-long, independent learners. From the time a child starts at primary school, homework enables parents and their children to work together and it also provides the basis for raised expectations and a strong work ethic.

Reading:

Children will be sent home with a ‘reading book’ which is pitched at their level of reading and aims to improve their reading fluency and ability. Reading aloud is a crucial part of reading fluency and therefore we believe daily practice is exceptionally important.

As well as a ‘reading book’ your child may well chose to come home with a ‘reading for pleasure book’. The purpose of these books are to develop your child’s love of reading and should be shared with an adult. We highly recommend that you read these books to your child and encourage them to join in when they can.

Alongside reading books children in Years 1-6 will be sent home with a daily fluency reader. This should be read with an adult for 1 minute daily. The children should record their daily word count which should improve during the week as their fluency improves.

Please remember to log any reading time you spend with your child on the ‘Go Read‘ app.

Spellings:

Children in Years 1 – 6 will receive a list of fortnightly spellings to learn at home.

• In Key Stage One these spellings will reflect the phonics stage the children are at.


• In Key Stage Two these spellings will relate to the spelling pattern the children are learning in spelling lessons.

All spelling lists are uploaded onto Spelling Shed so your child can practise them independently as well as with a parents support. Spelling Shed can be accessed through your child’s Wonde Login.

Maths:

Children in Years 1 – 6 will receive a weekly maths task to complete at home. This will be sent home on a Friday and children are expected to return it on a Monday when tasks are then looked at in class with teachers. These tasks will vary from practical tasks to timed arithmetic activities. If you find that your child is really struggling with the set task please let their teacher know and we will make sure that a member of staff works with them to ensure they understand.

Holiday Homework:

We understand that some parents like to have activities to complete with their children during holiday time. Children will be given ‘Holiday Homework’ which will consist of a sheet with a variety of activities on which children can pick and choose from. Unlike other forms of homework, there is no expectation that this is done, but we always love to see anything that our children have completed in their spare time.

Topic Homework: 

If you would like to support your child’s learning further then please look at your child’s year group’s topics and spend some time building their knowledge and understanding in the areas they will be covering (staff are always happy to point you in the right direction if you are not sure). We highly recommend taking your child to local museums and the library at any time as such experiences build a child’s love of learning.
